Living in Whitehall

Whitehall sits on the south side of White Lake, across the channel from Montague. The two together are what locals call the White Lake area, and people here move between them without thinking about it.

Here is the thing worth understanding before you start searching, and it is the question I am asked most about this town. The city of Whitehall is about five miles inland from Lake Michigan. A Whitehall address is a different matter, and it reaches a good deal further than the city does.

That is not a technicality. It is how the listings are written, it is how people here talk, and it is why somebody searching for Whitehall Lake Michigan waterfront is not confused. Out here the mailing address covers far more ground than the incorporated city. That is normal for rural West Michigan and surprising if you have come from somewhere dense.

So Whitehall neighborhoods stretch across four different waters. White Lake and the channel on the town side. The White River, which crosses the township and enters White Lake right at the city. Duck Lake, southwest of town. And Lake Michigan itself. Whitehall is in Muskegon County.

Neighborhood Tour and Local Lifestyle

Down at the marina, Goodrich Park sits on White Lake with a splash pad, playground, picnic shelter and a path along the water, beside the 50-slip municipal marina. It is the easiest afternoon in town and it costs nothing. The photo at the top of this page was taken standing on that walkway. The shore you are looking at across the water is the Montague side, which tells you most of what you need to know about how close these two towns actually are.

Fetch Brewing Company is in the old 1912 State Bank on Colby Street, and they kept the vault. Locals say Fetch. Hanson Hill Waterfront Grill is the fine dining end, looking out over the water on Mears Avenue. If you have been coming here a while you knew it as Mylan's, which it was until 2024.

Pekadill's has been going since 1983 and is the one I would point a newcomer to first. Sandwiches and soups, more than thirty hand-packed ice cream flavors in summer, and a garden patio round the back. Colby's Cafe & Brew is the newer, more modern end, with chef-style dishes closer to what you would find in Chicago, which is the one I mention to people who have moved from a city and are quietly worried about what they gave up.

Gary's is the other end of the scale and just as necessary. It has been around since I was a kid, it is simple, and it is good the whole way through. It used to be over in Montague and has been in Whitehall for years now, which everybody local knows and no listing will ever tell you.

The bike trail runs right through town. The Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail comes up 11.1 paved miles from North Muskegon and meets the Hart-Montague Trail, which carries on 22.7 miles to Hart. Both were railways before they were trails. Going down the trail past the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce you pass an old caboose sitting out beside it, which is the sort of thing you only notice from a bike.

A short way down the road is Colby Escape Room, built into the town's original 1922 Masonic Temple. Worth knowing for a rainy weekend when the lake is not cooperating.

How Search The Lakeshore Serves Whitehall

I am Tamara Hekkema, a REALTOR® with Greenridge Realty, and I have lived in West Michigan my whole life. Whitehall is the town where the question which water are we actually talking about matters most, because one address can mean an in-town home or a Lake Michigan lot, and those two have nothing in common except the word on the envelope.

That is the job on this side of the lake. Before you spend a weekend driving, I tell you which water a listing is actually on, what that water does through the year, and what it means for the way you would use the place. Getting it wrong costs people a season, and sometimes the purchase.

For buyers that is The Lakeshore Recon Method. If you are two or three hours out, I go and read the property myself first. Frontage, bottomland, access, what the road is like in February. Then I tell you what I found, including when it means walking away.

For sellers it is The Lakeshore Demand Method. The marketing starts before your home reaches the MLS, in front of a paid and targeted audience, so buyers are already waiting rather than waiting to be found. A written report reaches you every week. You can cancel at any time if you are not satisfied.

More than $4 million in closed sales over my last twelve months, up from under a million the year before.

Whitehall Neighborhoods and Communities

Tannery Bay is the one people name. It sits on the Whitehall side of the water, and if you have stood at Goodrich Park looking at boats with houses behind them, that is what you were looking at. It is called Tannery Bay because there was a tannery there, standing until it was torn down within the last forty years or so, which is recent enough that plenty of people here remember it. That history is also the reason the bay was cleaned up, in 2002 and again in 2013, and the reason White Lake came off the federal Area of Concern list in 2014 as the first site in the Lake Michigan basin to do so. I put that on the page rather than leaving you to find it, because you would find it, and the ending is a good one.

Beyond that, the useful division here is by water, because the water is what changes the purchase.

White Lake and the channel. The town side, looking north at Montague. Depth, bottom, dock setup and how the wind sits on your stretch all decide what a property is worth to you, and none of that is in the listing. Start at waterfront homes in Whitehall.

The White River. The river crosses the township and enters White Lake at the city. Quieter water than the lake, different through the year, and the part of Whitehall that out-of-town buyers almost never think to search.

Duck Lake. Southwest of town, with Duck Lake State Park sitting on Duck Lake on one side and Lake Michigan on the other. One thing to know before you picture the boat: the channel between them is shallow and a dam under the Scenic Drive bridge blocks the route through. You can walk between the two. You cannot run a boat between them. That is exactly the sort of thing to learn before you buy rather than after.

Lake Michigan. Reached by a Whitehall address rather than by the city limits, as above. A different market, different weather on it, and a different buyer.

Vacant land. Buildability, septic, well, setbacks and access all get decided before you own it. See lakeshore land in Whitehall. If you are arriving from out of state, relocating to Whitehall covers what the first year looks like.

Whitehall Housing Market and Home Types

Housing runs from in-town homes on small lots through newer construction, waterfront on White Lake and the channel, river and Duck Lake frontage, Lake Michigan property, and vacant parcels. In September 2026, 17 homes sold in Whitehall at a median price of $360,495. The median home took 20 days to sell, and 41 homes were for sale. (MichRIC data via InfoSparks, September 2026. Updated monthly.)

A median across all of that tells you very little, and here it tells you even less than it does in Montague, because the same town name covers an in-town home and a Lake Michigan lot. The number that matters is what your particular water has actually sold for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Whitehall on Lake Michigan?

The city itself sits about five miles inland. A Whitehall address is a different thing and does reach Lake Michigan, which is why you will see Whitehall on Lake Michigan listings. Out here the mailing address covers much more ground than the city limits. If Lake Michigan frontage is what you actually want, say so early and I will tell you which listings genuinely have it.

Can I take a boat from Duck Lake out to Lake Michigan?

No. The channel between them is shallow and there is a dam under the Scenic Drive bridge, so there is no route through for a boat. You can walk between the two at Duck Lake State Park, on the boardwalk under the road. If running a boat out to the big lake is part of your plan, Duck Lake is not the water for it, and that is worth knowing before you buy.

I have read that White Lake had a contamination problem. What is the actual story?

It is a real history and it has a finished ending, so here it is straight. White Lake was named a Great Lakes Area of Concern in 1985, one of 42 across the Great Lakes, after decades of chemical manufacturing, waste disposal and tannery operations. Tannery Bay was cleaned up in two stages: in 2002 the State of Michigan and Genesco removed 85,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment, and in 2013 the EPA removed another 8,700 cubic yards along the shoreline and covered it with clean sand. On 30 October 2014 White Lake was delisted, and it was the first site in the entire Lake Michigan basin to come off that list. I would rather you heard that from me than found it in a government PDF with no context. It is also worth saying plainly that the delisting is about the lake, not about any particular property, and anything specific to a home you are considering gets checked for that home.

Is Whitehall the same as the White Lake area?

Whitehall and Montague together are the White Lake area, on either side of the channel. A local saying White Lake usually means both towns rather than one. It matters when you are searching, because listings and locals do not always use the same word for the same place.
